LACTATE THRESHOLD
What is it?
The exercise intensity at which lactate builds up in the bloodstream at a faster rate than the body can remove it.
Why is it important?
A higher Lactate Threshold indicates the individual can continue at a higher exercise intensity (speed and power output) for longer before exhaustion making it a principal determinant of successful athletic performance during endurance events. It can be used to inform:
-
Appropriate training intensities and plans
-
Improvements in lactate threshold as a result of training intervention
-
The intensity at which you can train and perform before “hitting the wall” from high levels of blood lactate
What it involves?
The lactate threshold test is performed on a bike or treadmill. Exercise intensity is increased incrementally in 4 - 5 minute stages. At the end of each stage a blood sample is taken from a finger prick. This test typically consists of 7 - 8 stages in total or until a significant increase in blood lactate is identified.
