TOTAL DAILY ENERGY EXPENDITURE
What is it?
Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of calories you burn each day and consists of the resting metabolic rate (RMR), the thermic effect of food (TEF) and energy expended during physical activity (PAEE).
Why is it important?
TDEE data can be used to guide specific nutrition support through determining the following:
-
Speed of metabolism
-
Changes in metabolism speed as a result of nutrition or training interventions
-
Reason for lack of/ excessive weight gain or loss
-
Daily calorie needs to improve and maintain body composition, weight and performance
-
Daily calorie needs to prevent:
-
reduced immunity, recovery and performance
-
mood and sleep disturbances
-
muscle and bone mineral density loss
-
increase in stress hormones
-
irregular menstrual cycles
-
What it involves?
RMR is typically measured for 20 minutes. The participant lays relaxed and breaths normally whilst wearing a face mask connected to a machine which measures inspired and expired gases. This data can then be used to calculate the number of calories that are burnt at rest.
PAEE is measured using GPS units or professional activity monitor watches for a selected period of time.
